Molecular Movements

QuestionAnswer
Diffusion The movement of a substance from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration caused by the random movement of particles of the substance
Osmosis The net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (concentrated solution), through a partially permeable membrane
Hypertonic A solution that causes a cell to shrink because of osmosis
Hypotonic A solution that causes a cell to swell because of osmosis
Isotonic A solution that produces no change in cell volume because of osmosis
