Tissues and Organs

3/4

QuestionAnswer
single-celled dependence independent, do not directly depend on other cells
Specialized Cells cells that perform a specific function
Tissues perform particular, specialized function
Four Basic Types (animal) Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nerve
Four Basic Types (plant) Epidermal, Ground, Vascular, Meristematic
Organ organized group of tissues performing complex body function, function as part of organ system (normally), or more than one
Cellular Differentiation start as zygote (fertilized egg), divides to form embryo, and form diverse, specialized cells (directed by gen info in DNA)
Stem Cells may differentiate into different cell types, stem cells occur in clumps that specialize - embryonic: differentiate into any type - adult: differentiate into certain type
Ground Tissue in Plants mesophyll - chloroplast, etc.
Meristematic in Plants - occurs during growth - shoot, root tips, etc.
Flower Organs - petal - pistil (female): stigma, style, ovary, ovule - stigma: most prominent organ - ovary: egg repository - ovules: "eggs" - stamen (male): anther, filament - sepal - receptacle - leaf, stem - vascular bundles: xylem, phloem, cambium
Rhizome secondary plant system growing hiorizontally above soil surface
Root Tubers absorb water, minerals, make available to rest of plant
Mycorrhizae pockets for bacteria/fungi
Shoot System Stem (central structure, holds + connects organs), Leaves (attach via petioles), Flower (reproductive organ)
Epithelial - lines body cavities + outer surfaces - protects structures - forms glands producing hormones, enzymes, sweat
Connective - supports + protects structures - forms blood - stores fat - fills empty spaaces
Muscle - movement
Nerve - responds to stimuli - transmits + stores info
Meristematic - unspecialized, capable of dividing by mitosis - several locations in plant - responsible for growing new parts of plants
Epithelial - protective outer - exchange of materials - gases in/out of plant
Ground - stem: strength, support - roots: food, water - leaves: photosynthesis
Vascular - substances from roots to leaves - sugars from leaves to other parts of plants

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
