bio chapter 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cytoskeleton | supports and shapes cells, helps position and transport organelles, provides strength, assists in cell division, aids in cell movement |
| nucleus | stores genetic information |
| endoplasmic reticulum | interconnected network of thin folded membranes where many processes occur |
| ribosomes | link amino acids together to form proteins |
| vesicles | membrane -bound sacs that hold materials |
| vacuoles | fluid-filled sacs that hold materials |
| mitochondria | supply energy to cell |
| lysosomes | contain enzymes to digest materials |
| centrioles | tubes found in centrosomes, help divide DNA, form cilia and flagella |
| cell wall | provides rigid support for plant cells only |
| chloroplast | convert solar energy to chemical energy |
| cell theory | all organisms are made of cells, all existing cells are produced by other living cells, cells are the most basic unit of life |
| shared cell characteristics | microscopic, enclosed by membrane, filled with cytoplasm |
| eukaryotic cells | Contain a nucleus and other organelles that are bound by membranes. |
| prokaryotic cells | no nucleus or membrane bound organelles |
