What is the role of nucleic acids? They store, transmit, and express hereditary information.
What does a gene consist of? DNA, nucleic acid, and nucleotides.
What are the monomers of nucleic acids? Nucleotides
What are the polymers of nucleic acids? Polynucleotides.
What are the 2 types of nucleic acids? Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
DNA provides directions for...? Replication
Through gene expression, DNA does what? Directs synthesis of mRNA and controls protein synthesis.
Each gene along a DNA molecule directs synthesis of what? mRNA
Why does mRNA interact with the cell's protein synthesizing machinery? To direct polypeptide production.
Genetic Information Flow DNA, RNA, protein
What does a nucleotide consist of? Nitrogenous base, pentose sugar, and phosphate groups.
A nucleotide- a phosphate group = Nucleoside
What are the covalent linkages in polynucleotides called? phosphodiester linkage
What shape does DNA form? Double helix
How many polynucleotides does DNA have? 2
What base pairings are complimentary? Adenine=Thymine Guanine= Cytosine
Is RNA single or double stranded? Single
What is thymine replaced with when DNA transcribes to RNA? Uracil
What shape does RNA have? It comes in variable forms, unlike DNA, with its double helix.
