leaf functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cuticle | outermost layer of plants; protects plants against drought, uv radiation, chemical attack, mechanical injuries, and pathogen/pest infections |
| upper epidermis | a single layer of cells under the cuticle; helps protect leaf by aiding in preventing water loss and providing an extra layer between the outside and inside of the leaf |
| palisade mesophyll | site of photosynthesis |
| vascular bundle | made up of two main tissues: xylem & phloem |
| xylem | distributes water and dissolved minerals upward through the plant, from the roots to the leaves |
| phloem | carries food downward from the leaves to the roots |
| lower epidermis | protective layer of cells; produces waxy cuticle in some plant species; contains pores called stomata |
| stomata | allows carbon dioxide and oxygen to move in and out of the plant |
| guard cells | surrounded by stomatal pores and located in leaf epidermis; controls influx and eeflux of carbon dioxide and water from leaves |
| spongy mesophyll | forms a layer next to the palisade cells; allows for the interchange of gases (CO2) that are needed for photosynthesis |
