leaf functions

TermDefinition
cuticle outermost layer of plants; protects plants against drought, uv radiation, chemical attack, mechanical injuries, and pathogen/pest infections
upper epidermis a single layer of cells under the cuticle; helps protect leaf by aiding in preventing water loss and providing an extra layer between the outside and inside of the leaf
palisade mesophyll site of photosynthesis
vascular bundle made up of two main tissues: xylem & phloem
xylem distributes water and dissolved minerals upward through the plant, from the roots to the leaves
phloem carries food downward from the leaves to the roots
lower epidermis protective layer of cells; produces waxy cuticle in some plant species; contains pores called stomata
stomata allows carbon dioxide and oxygen to move in and out of the plant
guard cells surrounded by stomatal pores and located in leaf epidermis; controls influx and eeflux of carbon dioxide and water from leaves
spongy mesophyll forms a layer next to the palisade cells; allows for the interchange of gases (CO2) that are needed for photosynthesis
