Cell Structure
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Name the 3 parts of the Cell Theory | - All organisms are made of cells - All existing cells are produced by other living cells - The cell is the most basic unit of life |
| Describe the basic structure of a prokaryotic cell | They are much smaller and simpler than a eukaryotic cell, they lack organelles, they have no nucleus, and are surrounded by a cell wall |
| What organisms are prokaryotic? | Bacteria and archaea |
| What organisms are eukaryotic? | Animals, plants, fungus, and protists |
| Cell Membrane | Regulates what comes in and out of the cell |
| Cytoplasm | Regulates the cell shape and environment of the cell |
| Nucleus | Control and storage center of the cell, where the genetic material/DNA/instructions on how the cell is supposed to work are stored |
| Golgi body or apparatus | Modifies the proteins after being transposed from the ribosome. Does things like adding carbohydrates. |
| Vacuole | An example of a vesicle, stores fat, central vacuole only in plant cells |
| Mitochondria | Generates energy or ATP |
| Lysosomes | Only in animal cells, digestive system of the cell, degrades material from outside the cell and digests components of the cell |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Moves things around the cell |
| Ribosomes | Builds proteins, and sends them to the Golgi body |
| Cell Wall | Only in plant cells, protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives shape to the cell, not part of the cell |
| Chloroplast | Only in plant cells, converts light energy into chemical energy |
| Chromosomes | Located in the nucleus, helps regulate gene expression |
