What are some examples of land environments? deserts, forests, and grasslands
How many species have we discovered? over 2 million
What branch of science is biology? life science
What three categories is science divided into? life, physical, and earth
What have humans studied throughout history? living things
What do prehistoric cave drawings show? crop yields, domestication of animals, and mummifications
When was the first school of medicine established? 400 B.C.
Who established the first school of medicine? Hippocrates-Greek Scientist
What 4 realms were thought to control the body? blood, black bile, yellow bile, phlegm
What was Aristotle responsible for? the classification of living things (blood vs no blood, plant vs animals)
What are the 6 Kingdoms of Life? archaebacteria, eubacteria, protista, fungi, plant, animals
What is science limited by? technology
What is Leonardo de Vinci famous for? multiple anatomical drawings
What did Louis Pasteur determine? that living things can only come from other living things in 1859
What did Pasteur's discovery lead to? cell theory
What are the parts of the organization of life? subatomic particles, atoms, elements, molecules, macromolecules, organelles, cells, tissues, organs, systems, organisms
What are the main categories of cells? Unicellular, and multicellular
What are the three subatomic particles? protons(p+), neutrons (+-), and electrons (e-)
How does your body work to maintain homeostasis of temperature when you're hot? sweat, heart rate speeds up, respiratory rate speeds up, blood vessels dilated and move to the surface
How does your body work to maintain homeostasis of temperature when you're cold? shiver, heart rate slows down, respiratory rate slows down, blood vessels contract and move away from the surface
What do all living things require? energy
What is energy? the ability to cause change or do work
What can Autotrophs (producers) do that heterotrophs can't? make their own food
What can Heterotrophs (consumers) not do? make their own food
What are the characteristics of life? cellular, metabolism, heredity, homeostasis, reproduction, responsiveness, growth and development
Describe this Characteristic of life. Cellular all living things are made up of cells
Describe this Characteristic of life. Metabolism all living things need energy
Describe this Characteristic of life. Heredity all living things contain DNA and pass it to offspring
Describe this Characteristic of life. Homeostasis cells function best in a small range of conditions...temp., acidity, sugar levels, etc
Describe this Characteristic of life. Reproduction all living things reproduce
Describe this Characteristic of life. Responsiveness all living things respond to their environment/stimuli
Describe this Characteristic of life. Growth and development all living things change in shape, size, and structure
What is an ecosystem made up of? community of organisms + their physical environment
What is natural selection? survival of the fittest (you don't adapt, you don't survive)
What are the two types of autotrophs? chemosynthetic and photosynthetic
What is the independent variable? the part of an experiment that is manipulated. (ex. type of fertilizer)
What is the dependent variable? the part of an experiment that is observed and measured. (ex. plant growth)
What are the two forms data comes in? Quantitive and qualitative
What is Quantitative data? numeric measurements. (ex. the dolphin body fat ranged from 4-5%. There were 12 dolphins.)
What is Qualitative data? descriptions in words. (ex. the dolphins ranged in color from gray to white. The dolphins are engaged in play and seemed happy.)
When/why do theories change? because new information is obtained. Typically due to advances in technology.
What is a light microscope? used in classrooms, cheapest, not very powerful, use light beam, can view living things.
What is an electron microscope? two main types, expensive, powerful, uses a beam of electrons, cannot view living things
What are the two types of electron microscopes? TEM- Transmission Electron Microscope (2D, artificial coloring) SEM- Scanning Electron Microscope (3D,, artificial coloring)
What is scanning tunneling? very expensive and very powerful scope that uses needle like probes to view living things 3-dimensionally
What are X-rays? imaging method used to view hard tissue
What are MRI's? Magnetic Resonance Imaging- device used to view soft tissues. uses a strong magnetic field to produce a cross-section image.
What depends on your knowledge of biology? Your health and the health of your environment
What offers great promise but also raises issues? biotechnology
