TermDefinition
variation the difference in DNA among individuals or the differences between populations
adaption Any heritable characteristic that increases an organism's ability to survive and reproduce in its environment. Can be helpful, harmful, or neutral
fitness Describes how well an organism can survive and reproduce in its environment
natural selection Process by which organisms in nature with variations most suited to their local environment survive and leave more offspring
selective pressure The organisms that are better suited to their environment survive the pressure of selective agents, aka "survival of the fittest"
artificial selection When farmers select the most useful breed of an organism ex the cow that produces the most milk
stabilizing selection favors intermediate variants
directional selection single phenotype is favored
disruptive selection both extremes are favored
common ancestry An ancestor shared by two or more species
biogeography Study of where organisms live now and where they and their ancestors lived in the past
fossil record history of life as documented by fossils
Malthus If the human population grew unchecked, there wouldn't be enough living space and food for everyone.
Hutton and Lyell Concluded that the earth is extremely old and that the processes that changed Earth in the past are the same processes that operate in the present. If earth's surface could change over time, could life also change over time?
Lamarck Organisms could change during their lifetimes by selectively using or not using various parts of their bodies, and these could be passed down to their offspring.
Wallace Had the same ideas about evolution that Darwin did
Darwin species can change over time, that new species come from pre-existing species, and that all species share a common ancestor
