what is Best Interest? - the value of pts. best interest at the heart of medicine -the core of doctor pt. relationship
what are the 3 theoretical approaches to well being? 1) mental state theory 2) desire fulfillment theory 3) objective list theory
what is the mental state theory? well being defined in terms if pts. mental state
hedonism the view that happiness or pleasure is the only intrinsic good and unhappiness or pain is the only intrinsic bad
what is the desire fulfillment theory? well being consists in having ones desires fulfilled - to maximize a persons well being we ought to give what they want - desires related to a persons life span
what is autonomy? the capacity to think , decide and act on the basis of such thought and decision , freely and independently
what should a sonographer do with pts. autonomy? respect patients autonomy , to help pts. come to their own decisions
what is rights? competent adult pt. has the right to refuse treatment! ex) individual rights to refuse treatment might trump the doctors duty to treat in the best interest of the pt.
what is ethics? defined as systematic reflection on and analysis of morality
what is morality? concerns right and wrong conduct (what we ought not do) and good and bad character (the kinds of persons we should become) - reflects duties and values
as a sonographer you must do what? 1) protect pts. and or study subjects by adhering to oversight approval of investigational procedures, including documented informed consent 2) refrain from from anything that may alter judgement or skill and thereby compromise pt. care 3)be accountab
what is principle 1? in order to promote patient well being
what is principle 2? to promote the highest level of competent practice
what is principle 3? to promote professional integrity and public trust
euthanasia easy or painless death , or intentional ending of life from a person suffering from a painful disease
hypochondriac abnormal preoccupation with one's health and a fear of having or getting a disease despite physical evidence to the contrary.
kleptomania recurrent inability to resist urges to steal items that you generally don't really need and that usually have little value.
nonmaleficence directs sonographers to not do harm - requires to obtain appropriate education and clinical skills to perform each exam requires (more in notes)
beneficence promotion of what is best for pt. -emphasizes moral importance of doing good to others
what does justice mean? defined as fairness , sonographers must strive to treat all pts. equally. - injustice = benefit to person is entitled and unfair
what are the two types of consent? informed and implied
informed consent ... autonomy is the foundation for informed consent - written or verbal - consent form
implied consent ... court recognize the concept of implies consent "assumes consent"
what capacities are needed for competence? - understanding and communication - reasoning and deliberation - person must have set values pr conception of the good
revocation of consent ... pt. can withdraw consent at any time and sonographer must stop and respect decision
what does dignity mean ? the quality of being worthy honored or esteemed
patient dignity ... every patient has the right to be treated with respect in a dignified manner
what does battery mean? means assault -if one person touches another without consent
2 types of laws are ... administrative law and common law
administrative law made by administrative agencies appointed by the president or governor ex) OSHA
common law is court made law based on custom usage - most malpractice laws are court made laws.
veracity means truthfulness
integrity means adherence to moral and ethical practices - in terms of honesty = integrity means no difference b/w what you do, say or think all come together
sonographers must be able to... - lift more than 30 lbs. - push and pull - bend and stoop - work standing of feet 80% of time ; assist pts. on and off exam table ;
what does ALARA mean? As Long As Reasonable Achievable
