Cell Cycle
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cell Cycle | events in the life of a cell that results in growth, duplication of DNA in order to produce new cells |
| G1 | phase of cell growth prior to cell division; occurs during interphase |
| S | DNA replicates(synthesis) |
| G2 | DNA copy is checked for mistakes more cytoplasm and organelles are made |
| G0 | cell performs normal function but does not divide; checkpoint occurs and some cells remove themselves from the cell cycle |
| Interphase | the cell grows and prepares to divide; includes G phases and S phase |
| Mitosis | division of the nucleus |
| Prophase | chromosomes become visible, nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappear, centrioles start making spindle fibers (PREPARE) |
| Metaphase | chromosomes line up in the middle(equator) (MIDDLE) |
| Anaphase | sister chromatids are pulled apart and move towards opposite poles (AWAY) |
| Telophase | chromosomes reach opposite poles, chromosomes decondense or unwind, nuclear membrane and nucleolus reappear(TWO) |
| Cytokinesis | division of cytoplasm to create two new daughter cells formed; occurs after mitosis |
| Somatic Cells | all cells except sex cells (also known as gamete like sperm and egg); diploid cells; result of mitosis |
| Sister chromatids | two identical parts of a chromosome(two left shoes) |
| centromere | connects the sister chromatids together |
| cell plate | forms during cytokinesis in a plant cell |
| cancer | uncontrolled cell growth because cells do not go through G0 and the cycle repeats. |
| 4 stages of mitosis | Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase (PMAT) |
