| Vaccines | treatment used to prevent viruses |
| Vaccination | a weakened or dead virus to stimulate the body to attack the virus if it enters the body again |
| common cold, influenza, warts(HPV), HIV(AIDS), chicken pox | Caused by types of viruses |
| lysogenic cycle | the virus does not immediately kill the host cell but inserts viral DNA into host DNA and will eventually become harmful |
| lytic cycle | rapidly kills the host cell and new viruses are released |
| host cell | a virus can only reproduce inside of this |
| bacteriophage | virus that infects bacteria |
| nucleic acid | DNA or RNA |
| virus | non-living made up of a protein coat and nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) |
| antibiotics | used to kill bacteria; cannot be used on viruses |
| Capsid | The protein based coat around the nucleic acid core of the virus |
| Viral Envelope | Lipid based outer covering found on some viruses |
