Microscopy Math & Cell Division
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Field of View (FOV) | The diameter of the circle seen under a microscope |
| Stem Cells | Cells that retain the ability to divide and differentiate into various types of cells |
| Multipotent | Able to give rise to multiple cells within a lineage |
| Pluripotent | Able to give rise to all cell types in an adult |
| Totipotent | Able to give rise to all embryonic and adult kineages |
| Cyclins | Control cell cycle |
| Proto-oncogenes | Encodes proteins to stimulate cell division, stop cell differentiation, & halt cell death |
| Oncogenes | Increases production of proteins to increase cell devision, differentiation, and death; cancer cells |
| Mitosis: Prophase | Centrioles divide & nuclear membrane disappear |
| Mitosis: Metaphase | Chromosomes line up and attach to spindle fibers |
| Mitosis: Anaphase | Chromosome pairs split and move apart |
| Mitosis: Telophase | Nuclear membrane forms around separated chromosomes |
| Chiasmata | Evidence of exchange between chromatids |
| Nondisjunction | Failure of homologous pairs of chromosomes to separate properly during meiosis |
| Trisomy | 3 copies of one chromosome type; ex. down syndrome |
| Monosomy | 1 copy of chromosome type; ex. Turner's syndrome |
