QuestionAnswer
What is a somatic cell? A cell in the body that has nothing to do with reproduction
What is a germline cell? A cell in the body that is important in reproduction
Somatic cell divides by mitosis or meiosis? Why? Mitosis - meiosis is only used to produce gametes
Are somatic cells haploid or diploid? diploid
Are germline cells haploid or diploid? diploid
Are gametes haploid or diploid? why? haploid. because sperm (gamete - haploid) + egg (gamete - haploid) = zygote (diploid)
Germline cell divides by mitosis to form.... more germline cells
Germline cell divides by meiosis to form.... gametes
The process needed for a cell to carry out specialised functions. Differentiation BECAUSE CELLS WANT TO BE DIFFERENT (#unique)
How do cells become specialised? They EXPRESSES certain GENES to produce SPECIFIC PROTEINS characteristic for that type of cell
Are embryonic stem cells PLURIPOTENT OR MULTIPOTENT? PLURIPOTENT (ALL CELLS)
Are tissue stem cells PLURIPOTENT OR MULTIPOTENT? MULTIPOTENT (MANY CELLS)
What can embryonic stem cells differentiate into? ANY BODY CELL
What can tissue stem cells differentiate into? ONLY SOME (a narrow range) TYPES OF CELLS
What are embryonic stem cells used for in the embryo? CELLS can DIFFERENTIATE into ANY BODY CELL TYPE so can make up the BABY
What are tissue stem cells used for? GROWTH, REPAIR AND RENEWAL of cell in that TISSUE
What are therapeutic uses for stem cells? CORNEA REPAIR REPAIR OF DAMAGED/DISEASED TISSUES/ORGANS SKIN GRAFTS
What are research uses of stem cells? MODEL CELLS STUDYING HOW DISEASES DEVELOP DRUG TESTING
Ethical issues of using embryonic stem cells? Some people consider them to already be HUMAN LIFE
How do primary tumours form? - Cancer cells DON'T RESPOND to REGULATORY SIGNALS - They DIVIDE EXCESSIVELY - FORMS A TUMOR
How do secondary tumours form? SOME CELLS FAIL TO ATTACH TO EACH OTHER TRAVEL THROUGH CIRCULATORY SYSTEM ATTACHES TO ANOTHER PART OF THE BODY FORMS SECONDARY TUMOUR
