| principle | a statement based on repeated experimental observation that describes an aspect of the world |
| law | broad concept or principle that describes how something occurs in nature |
| theory | an explanation of an observed phenomenon based on research |
| qualitative | describes qualities using the senses |
| quantitative | uses numbers and measurements to quantify something |
| independent variable | what is deliberately changed or manipulated in an investigation |
| dependent variable | what changes in response to the IV; what is measured |
| constants | aspects of an experiment that are kept constant/consistent |
| experimental group | group(s) being tested |
| control group | standard/normal group used for comparison |
| technology | the application of scientific discoveries to meet human needs and goals through the development of products and processes |
| engineering | applies scientific and mathematic principles to solve problems |
| matter | anything that has mass and occupies space |
| atom | the smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element |
| cell | most basic unit of life |
| surface tension | measure of how difficult it is to stretch or break the surface of a liquid/resist an external force |
| solution | uniform homogenous mixture of two or more substances |
| solute | what gets dissolved in a solution |
| solvent | what does the dissolving in a solution |
| macromolecules | large organic molecules that make up all living things |
| monomer | small basic sub-unit that makes up polymers |
| polymer | larger more complex structure made of monomers |
| monosaccharide | single sugar molecule; the monomer of carbohydrates |
| polysaccharide | larger sugar molecule; the polymer of carbohydrates |
