Cell The smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms
Organism Any living thing
Cell Membrane Protective layer that covers a cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell's environment
Cytoplasm The region enclosed by the cell membrane that includes the fluid and all the organelles
Organelle A small body in a cell's cytoplasm that is specialized to perform a specific function
Nucleus The brain of the cell that contains the DNA in eukaryotic cells
Microscope An instrument that makes small objects look larger
Cell Theory A widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things
Mitochondria Cellular respiration occurs here. Powerhouse of the cell. Has its own DNA.
Structure What it looks like or is made of.
Function Its job or what it does.
Cell Wall The rigid supporting layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms.
Vacuole A sac-like organelle that stores waste, food, or other materials needed by the cells.
Chloroplast An organelle in the cells of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and changes it to an energy form that cells can use in making food.
