AP Biology 1.1-1.3
Term | Definition |
---|---|
adhesion | when water molecules attach to other kinds of molecules |
capillary action | movement of water within the spaces of a porous material due to the forces of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension |
hydrogen bonds | the electromagnetic attraction created between a partially positively charged hydrogen atom to a highly electronegative atom |
electronegativity | tendency of an atom or molecule to draw electrons towards itself |
covalent bonds | mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms |
ionic bonds | chemical bonding that includes a complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another |
cohesion | when water molecules attach to other water molecules |
solute | what is being dissolved |
solvent | the substance that does the dissolving |
polar covalent bonds | a covalent bond between two atoms where the electrons forming the bonds are unequally distributed |
nonpolar covalent bonds | type of chemical bond formed when electrons are shared equally between two atoms |
ion | an atom that has gained or lost electrons |
dehydration reaction | chemical reaction that involves the loss of water from the reacting molecule or ion (to put together while losing water) |
hydrolysis | chemical reaction in which water is used to break down a compound |
polymers | made from monomers linked by chemical bonds |
monomers | atoms or small molecules that bond together to from more complex structures |
