Part 2 of Chapter 3 Vocab.

TermDefinition
Chemosynthesis Process in which chemical energy instead of light energy is used to produce carbohydrates (food).
Consumers Organism that relies on other organisms for its energy and food supply; also called a heterotroph.
Detritivores Organism that feeds on plant and animal remains and other dead matter. *Decomposers convert dead material into decaying organic material called detritus, which the detritivores consume.*
Decomposers Organism that breaks down and obtains energy from dead organic matter.
Scavengers Animal that consumes the dead body of other animals.
Food chain Series of steps in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten.
Phytoplankton Microscopic marine algae found near the surface of the ocean because it’s photosynthetic, which means it requires sunlight in order to grow and live.
Food web Consists all of the food chains in an ecosystem and displays them linked together to show the feeding relationships among the various organisms.
Zooplankton Small free-floating animals that form part of plankton.
Trophic level Each step in a food chain or food web.
