| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Habitat | Area where an organism lives, including the living and nonliving factors that affect it. *Meets all the environmental conditions an organism needs to survive.* |
| Niche | An organism's role within an ecosystem (survival and reproduction). *Five factors: What it eats, what eats it, habitat, behavior, and impact on the ecosystem.* |
| Competitive exclusion principle | Principle that states that no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at the same time, so one will drive the other out because of the competition for limited resources (can’t stably coexist). |
| Predation | Interaction in which one organism (the predator) captures and feeds on another organism (the prey). *The killing by one living organism of another for food.* |
| Keystone species | Single species that are not usually abundant in a community yet other species in an ecosystem largely depend on. If it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically. |
| Symbiosis | A close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species. |
| Mutualism | Symbiotic (close) relationship in which both species benefit from the relationship. |
| Parasitism | Symbiotic (close) relationship in which one organism lives on or inside another organism and harms it. |
| Commensalism | Symbiotic (close) relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed. |
