| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Autotroph | an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide |
| Consumer | an organism that derives the organic compounds and energy it needs from the consumption of other organism |
| Denitrification | the microbial process of reducing nitrate and nitrite to gaseous forms of nitrogen, principally nitrous oxide and nitrogen |
| Decomposer | an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate that decomposes organic material |
| Detritivore | an animal which feeds on dead organic material, especially plant detritus |
| Energy Pyramid | a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding level, to the next in an ecosystem |
| Food Web | a system of interlocking and interdependent food chains |
| Heterotroph | an organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances |
| Nitrogen Fixation | the chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is assimilated into organic compounds, especially by certain microorganisms as part of the nitrogen cycle |
| Niche | a position or role taken by a particular kind of organism within its community. Such as a position may be occupied by different organisms in different localities |
| Qualitative Data | words/observation |
| Quantitative Data | numbers |
| Independent Variable | what the scientist is testing/changing |
| Dependent Variable | what is being measured, changes due to the independent variable |
| Constant | what stays the same throughout the experiment |
| Control | a group of the experiment lacking in the independent variable, used as comparison |
| Nutrient | a substance that provides nourishment essential for growth and the maintenance of life |
| Producer | an organism that produces organic compounds from simple substances such as water and carbon dioxide |
| Trophic Level | each of several hierarchical levels in an ecosystem, comprising organisms that share the same function in the food chain and the same nutritional relationship to the primary sources of energy |
| Bio | life |
| Photo | light |
| Endo | internal |
| Exo | external |
| Abiotic | not derived from living organisms |
| Biotic | relating to or resulting from living things, especially in their ecological relations |
