| mucosa | lining of the oral cavity |
| dentition | natural teeth in the dental arch |
| periodontal ligaments | tissue that supports and anchors the tooth in the socket |
| cervix | neck of the tooth |
| anterior | toward the front |
| apical foramen | natural opening at the tip of the root |
| fissure | deep groove, imperfect fusion of the enamel |
| quadrant | one quarter of an arch |
| lingual | surface of the teeth toward the tongue |
| lamina dura | thin compact bone that lines the alveolar socket |
| enamel | hard tissue that covers the anatomic crown of the tooth |
| buccal | surface of the teeth toward the cheek |
| occlusal | chewing surface of the posterior teeth |
| cementum | calcified connective tissue that covers the anatomical root |
| ventral | front or belly side of the body |
| proximal space | surface next to each other when teeth are adjacent |
| embrasure | triangular space in a gingival direction |
| maxillary | upper jaw, not movable |
| mesial | surface of the tooth facing the midline |
