| Ribosomes | make proteins |
| cell membrane | Controls what enters and leaves the cell; maintain homeostasis |
| nucleus | control center; DNA |
| cell wall | found in plants; structure, support, and protection |
| chloroplast | found in plants; photosynthesis |
| centrioles | animals only; cell division |
| rough ER | transports proteins; has ribosomes |
| Smooth ER | transports lipids |
| Golgi Body | modifies, packages, and ships materials out of the cell |
| nucleolus | makes ribosomes; darker region inside the nucleus |
| prokaryote | a cell that does not have a nucleus; bacteria is example |
| cytoplasm | jelly-like substance inside cell |
| eukaryote | a cell that has a nucleus and membrane bound organelles; plants, animals, protist, fungi |
| organelle | structure in a cell that has a function |
| vacuole | storage of water, salt, sugar, and waste |
| cell theory | basic unit of life, all living things have cells, cells come from pre-existing cells |
| Common structures | All cells have DNA, cytoplasm, cell membrane, and ribosomes |
| Lysosome | Breaks down material and cleans the cell |
| Cytoskeleton | Helps a cell keep its shape |
| Cilia and Flagella | carry out cell movement |
