Bio Chapter 1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is Science? | an organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world |
| What are the goals of Science? | to provide natural explanations, use explanations to understand patterns, make useful predictions |
| What is Science always doing? | Changing |
| What are the steps of the Scientific Method? | Observe and ask questions, infer and form hypotheses, design controlled experiments, collect and analyze data, form conclusions |
| What if experiments are not possible? | Observe (field study) |
| What traits allow scientists to make new ideas? | Curiosity,Skepticism,open-mindedness, and creativity |
| What does peer reviewed articles do? | Allows researchers to share ideas for others to test/evaluate |
| What are scientific theories? | Well tested explanations that join a large group of observations and hypotheses to help make accurate predictions, never the absolute truth |
| What is bias? | a particular point of view that is personal rather than scientific |
| What is biology? | the study of life/living things |
| What makes living things special? | have cells, obtain and use materials and energy, grow and develop, reproduce, respond to their environment, maintain a stable internal environment, and change over time |
| What is DNA? | The molecule in which all the complex information of life is stored |
| What is stimulus? | A signal an organism responds to |
| What is Sexual Reproduction? | two parents join cells to create an offspring |
| What is Asexual Reproduction? | a single organism reproduces an identical offspring on its own |
| What is Homeostasis? | maintaining a relatively stable internal condition when external conditions are drastic |
| What is Metabolism? | when an organism breaks down or builds up materials |
| What are the big ideas in Biology? | cell basis, info and heredity, matter and energy, growth, development, reproduction, homeostasis, evolution, structure and function, unity and diversity, interdependence in nature, a way of knowing |
| What is the Biosphere? | basically means "living planet", all organisms are linked to one another within this |
| What do the jobs of Biology consist of? | includes many overlapping fields that use different tools to study life from the level of molecules to the entire planet |
| What are some of the main Biology jobs? | Global ecology, biotechnology, evolution, genomics and molecular biology |
| What is the common system of measurement? | Most scientists use the metric system |
