|---|---|
| DNA | molecule present in all living cells that contains the information that determines the traits a living thing inherits and needs to live (i.e. how to build the proteins an organism needs) |
| mutation | a change in the order of information for a gene |
| gene | one set of instructions for an inherited trait (a "piece" from a DNA molecule) |
| mutagen | a physical or chemical agent that can cause a mutation |
| protein | a molecule that is needed to build and repair body structures and to regulate processes in the body |
| antibiotic resistance | a mutation which is beneficial for bacteria by causing them to be unaffected by drugs meant to kill them |
| beneficial mutation | a mutation that makes it easier for an organism to survive |
| pesticide resistance | a mutation which is beneficial for pests (such as insects) by causing them to be unaffected by drugs meant to kill them |
| deletion | a mutation where a nucleotide is removed from the gene |
| neutral mutation | A mutation that has no effect on the organism |
| harmful mutation | a mutation that makes it harder for an organism to survive |
| substitution | a mutation where one nucleotide replaces another |
| insertion | a mutation where an extra nucleotide is added to a gene |
| codon | three bases in a row on a gene |
| ribosome | the organelle that makes proteins |
| nucleotide | A building block of DNA; made of a sugar, a base (A, C, T, or G) and a phosphate |
