Intro to Science

TermDefinition
Control Group In an experiment, the group that is not exposed to the treatment; contrasts with the experimental group and serves as a comparison for evaluating the effect of the treatment.
Dependent (Responding) Variable the variable that is observed and that changes in response to the independent variable
Experimental Test a test where scientists change only one component in a system to determine the effects of this change
Hypothesis a testable prediction made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Independent (Manipulated) Variable factor in an experiment that a scientist purposely changes
Science An organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world.
Scientific Theory A well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results.
