Functions of cell organelles, cell theory and its main historical contributors
| Organelle | Function |
|---|---|
| Schwann | Discovered all animals are made of cells |
| Virchow | Stated that all cells come from other living cells |
| Schleiden | Stated that all plants are made of cells |
| All Cells Have. . . . | Cell Membranes DNA Cytoplasm Ribosomes |
| Hooke | Named cells "cells" |
| Plants vs. Animal Cells | Plant cells have cell walls, chlorplast, and a central vacuole |
| Leeuwenhoek | Saw the first living cells and called them animalcules |
| Eukaryote | Bigger, complex cells with a nucleus. Typically found in plants, animals, and fungi |
| Prokaryote | Small, simple cells without a nucleus. Typically found in unicellular organisms |
| 3 Parts of Cell Theory | 1. All living things are made of cells 2. Cells are the basic units of structure an function in living things 3. New cells are produced from existing cells |
| Cytoskeleton | Maintains cell shape; moves cell parts; helps cell move |
| Nucleus | Contains DNA |
| Cytoplasm | All cellular contents outside of the nucleus |
| Lysosome | Breaks down and recycles macromolecules |
| Cell Membrane | Regulates materials enteruing and leaving cell; protects and supports cell |
| Cilia | hair-like strutures that helps cells move |
| Flagella | Tail-like structure that helps cells move |
| Mitochondria | Converts chemical energy in food to usable compounds |
| Ribosome | Synthesizes proteins |
| Chloroplast | Converts solar energy to chemical energy stored in food |
| Cell Wall | Shapes, supports, and protects the cell |
| Smooth Endoplasmatic Reticulum | Contains enzymes that detoxify drugs |
| Rough Endoplasmatic Reticulum | Moves lipids for the cell membrane |
| Centriole | Organizes cell division |
| Vacuole | Stores materials |
| Golgi Apparatus | Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and llipids for storage or transport out of the cell |
