Biochem. Reactions
Bio. 4.2.1 Bio. Reactions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Biochemical Reactions | Chemical bonds are formed and broken within living things creating chemical reactions that impact the ability to maintain life and carry out life functions |
Cellular Respiration | The process which food molecules (glucose) are converted to energy used by most plants and animals |
Photosynthesis | The process that plant cells use to capture energy from the sun and converts it into glucose |
ATP - Adenosine Triphosphate | The molecule that stores and releases energy in its bonds when the cell needs it. |
ATP | The abbreviation for the main energy source for most living things |
Energy | ATP >< ADP + P + Energy |
Fermentation | Organisms undergoing Cellular Respiration without the presence of Oxygen. Yields 2 ATP molecules |
Lactic Acid Fermentation | Cellular Respiration that occurs in muscle cells w/o the presence of oxygen . Produces Lactic Acid which causes muscle soreness. Yields 2 ATP |
Glucose >>> Lactic Acid + 2 ATP | Formula for Lactic Acid Fermentation (muscle cells) |
Glucose >>> CO2 + Alcohol + 2 ATP | Formula for Alcoholic Fermentation (yeast cells) |
Alcoholic Fermentation | Cellular Respiration which occurs in yeast cells without the presence of Oxygen. CO2 and alchol are produced. Yields 2 ATP |
Formula for Photosynthesis | 6 CO2 + 6 H20 + RADIANT ENERGY (sun) >>C6H12O6 + 6 O2 |
Formula for Cellular Respiration | C6H12O6 + 6 O2 >>>> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy ( 36 ATP ) |
Glucose + Oxygen yields Carbon Dioxide + Water + 36 ATP | Reactants and Products for Cellular Respiration (Plants and Animals) |
Carbon Dioxide + Water + Radiant Energy >> Glucose + Oxygen | Reactants and Products for Photosynthesis ( Plants Only) |
Chemosynthesis | Process which some organisms use Sulfur and Nitrogen as their main energy source |
