TermDefinition
The Constitution The highest law in the country and the foundation on which all U.S. law has been built.
Statutes Actions passed by legislative bodies.
Regulations Proposed, adopted, and enforced by administrative agencies. Regulations reflect how laws will be implemented and enforced.
Agency guidelines Interpret how laws and regulations will be enforced. Examples: agency interpretations, policy statements, letters, and advisory materials to supplement or explain regulations and statutes.
Executive orders A chief telling a governmental unit what to do.
Common law Based on court decisions, rather than statutory law, and is recognized on the federal level.
