| dominant | covers over, or dominates, another form |
| trait | A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes |
| recessive | masked or covered by a dominant form |
| gene | a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring |
| probability | likelihood that a particular event will occur |
| phenotype | likelihood that a particular event will occur |
| inherit | to receive genes from a parent |
| carrier | A person who has one recessive allele for a trait, but does not have the trait |
| homozygous | Having two identical alleles for a particular gene |
| Punnett square | diagram that can be used to predict the genotype and phenotype combinations of a genetic cross |
| heterozygous | having two different alleles for a trait |
| alleles | different versions of a gene |
| pedigree | A diagram that shows the occurrence of a genetic trait in several generations of a family |
| karyotype | A picture of all the chromosomes in a cell arranged in pairs |
| genotype | An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations |
