| digestion | the breaking down of food molecules into usable nutrients |
| nutrients | substances in food that provide energy or help form body tissues and are necessary for life and growth |
| metabolism | the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism |
| amino acids | molecules that combine together to make proteins |
| catabolism | breaking down large molecules into smaller ones within an organism and releasing energy |
| anabolism | using energy and small molecules to build larger ones within an organism |
| calorie | a unit of measurement for energy |
| mitochondria | organelles where energy is produced (powerhouse of the cell) |
| glucose | A simple sugar that is an important source of energy |
| cellular respiration | the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food |
| enzyme | a protein that helps a chemical reaction to occur |
