protein a molecule made up of amino acids that is needed to build and repair body structures and regulate body processes
carbohydrates a class of energy-giving nutrients that includes sugars and starches
lipids compounds that can store energy (fats and oils)
macromolecule substance made when a large number of atoms combine
digestion the breaking down of food molecules into usable nutrients
nutrients substances in food that provide energy or help form body tissues and are necessary for life and growth
metabolism the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism
amino acids molecules that combine together to make proteins
catabolism breaking down large molecules into smaller ones within an organism and releasing energy
anabolism using energy and small molecules to build larger ones within an organism
calorie a unit of measurement for energy
mitochondria organelles where energy is produced (powerhouse of the cell)
glucose A simple sugar that is an important source of energy
cellular respiration the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
enzyme a protein that helps a chemical reaction to occur
