meiosis vocab

meiosis a type of cell division that creates haploid cells used in sexual reproduction
mitosis a type of cell division that creates exact copies of the parent cell
haploid cells containing only half of the genetic information, no pairs of chromosomes
diploid cells containing chromosomes in pairs
gamete a haploid reproductive cell such as sperm or eggs
somatic cell a diploid body cell; any cell other than a reproductive cell
homologous chromosomes with the same genes but different alleles
gene genetic information found on the chromosomes
allele different forms of a gene
crossing over exchange of genetic information between homologous chromosomes
fertilization the fusion of two gametes to create a new diploid cell
zygote a fertilized egg
