| mitosis | a type of cell division that creates exact copies of the parent cell |
| haploid | cells containing only half of the genetic information, no pairs of chromosomes |
| diploid | cells containing chromosomes in pairs |
| gamete | a haploid reproductive cell such as sperm or eggs |
| somatic cell | a diploid body cell; any cell other than a reproductive cell |
| homologous | chromosomes with the same genes but different alleles |
| gene | genetic information found on the chromosomes |
| allele | different forms of a gene |
| crossing over | exchange of genetic information between homologous chromosomes |
| fertilization | the fusion of two gametes to create a new diploid cell |
| zygote | a fertilized egg |
