what are the 4 steps of the practical? 1) cut the potato/ carrot into chips 2)find the mass of each chip using a balance 3)soak the chips in solutions of different salt/ sugar concentration for 30 minutes 4)reweigh the chips with the balance to find the final mass
what is the formula for working out % change in mass? mass after - mass before / mass before x100
how are the solutions seperated? The potato cells have a solution inside of them. There is another solution in the beaker. The solutions are separated by a partially permeable membrane.
what happens if the concentration of water is higher in the beaker? If the concentration of water is higher in the beaker than the potato chip, water will move into the chip by osmosis. It will increase in mass.
what happens if the concentration of water is higher in the chip? If the concentration of water is higher in the chip than the beaker, water will move out of the chip by osmosis. It will decrease in mass.
