diffusion & osmosis

TermDefinition
diffusion the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
osmosis the net movement of water from a high water potential to a low water potential through a partially permeable membrane
active transport the net movement of water from a low water potential to a high water potential through a partially permeable membrane (requires energy)
what affects the rate of diffusion? -concentration gradient (higher gradient=faster rate) -temperature (higher temperature=faster rate) -surface area (larger surface area=faster rate) -distance for diffusion (shorter distance=faster rate)
