Mitosis/meiosis
Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| cell cycle | process of celluar reproduction, occuring in 3 main stages, interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis |
| interphase | 1st stage of cell cycle during which the cell grows, matures and replicates DNA |
| mitosis | 2nd main stage of the cell cycle, during which the cell's replicated DNA divides and two genetically identical diploid daugher cells are produced. |
| cytokinesis | 3rd main stage of the cell cycle during which the cell's cytoplasm divides , creating a new cell. |
| chromosome | DNA containing structure that carries genetic material from one generation to another. |
| chromatin | relaxed form of DNA in the nucleus of a cell |
| prophase | where the cell spends most of it's time. the cell's chromatin condenses into chromosomes in the shape of an X |
| sister chromatid | structures that contain identical copies of DNA. |
| centromere | the structure at the centre of the chromosome where two sister chromatids attach. |
| spindle apparatus | includes the fibers, centrioles, and aster fibers. It helps in moving the chromosomes before cell division. |
| metaphase | 2nd stage of mitosis. The sister chromatids are pulled to the center or equater of the cell |
| anaphse | 3rd stage of mitosis. chromatids are pulled away or apart from the equator |
| telophase | the last stage of mitosis. The chromosomes arrive at the poles, the cell begins to relax and decondense. |
| cytokinesis | 3rd main stage of the cell cycle, during which the cell's cytoplasm divides creating a new cell. |
| cyclin | proteins |
| cancer | uncontrolled cell growth and division of cells |
| carcinogen | substances and agents known to cause cancer |
| apotosis | programmed cell death |
| gene | DNA segments |
| homologous chromosome | the chromosomes that make up a pair, one from each parent. |
| gamete | sex cell that has half the number of chromosomes |
| haploid | a cell with n number of chromosomes |
| fertilization | a process by which one haploid gamete combines with another haploid gamete. |
| diploid | a cell that contains 2n number of chromosomes |
| meiosis | where gametes are formed, a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes. |
| Crossing over | a process whereby chromosomal segments are exchanged between a pair of homologous chromosomes |
