| ecosystem | area where living and non-living things interact |
| marine | a water biome with salty water such as oceans, estuaries, coral reefs, & seas. |
| biotic | living things - plants, animals, bacteria, fungi |
| abiotic | non-living things - soil, water, sunlight, wind, precipitation (rain, snow, sleet), rocks, minerals |
| conservation | human efforts to protect species, their habitats, and ecosystems from extinction. |
| food web | connected food chains in an ecosystem that show the flow of energy in an ecosystem |
| competition | when two organisms need the same resource(food, water, shelter, territory, mate) and there is not enough |
| grassland | a land biome where grasses are the main plant life |
| deciduous forest | a land biome with four seasons with many kinds of trees that lose their leaves each autumn |
| tropical rainforest | a land biome where rainfall is abundant and temperatures are warm or hot all year |
| desert | a land biome where it is very dry with little water and few plants & animals |
| freshwater | a water biome with no salt such as rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, and wetlands |
| tundra | a land biome that is extremely cold and dry |
| community | a group of different organisms living in the same area and interact with each other |
| ecology | The study of how living things interact with each other and their environment |
| habitat | place where an organism lives |
| population | group of the same species that live in the same area |
| extinct | species that no longer has any known living individuals. |
| endangered | species whose numbers are so small that the species is at risk of extinction |
| niche | an organism's role in an ecosystem, or how it makes its living. |
| pollution | harmful materials into the environment |
| environment | the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates. |
| symbiosis | a relationship between two organisms that helps at least one of them |
| tiaga | the largest land biome that has mostly evergreen (cone bearing) trees. |
