What is a species? A group of living organisms that are similar and capable of reproducing.
What is artificial selection Humans selecting the best traits of plants or animals , and selectively breeding for those desired traits.
What is meant by "struggle for existence" That the members of each species compete regularly to obtain food, living spaces and other necessitates of life.
How did Darwin use the term "fitness" Ability of an individual to survive and reproduce. Results from adaptation and increases the organisms chance for survival.
What is an adaptation to evolutionists? Any inherited characteristics that increase an organisms chance for survival.
What is meant by survival of the fittest Organisms that become adapt and become better suited to their environment will have a better chance of survival and reproduction.
What is natural selection The organisms that have the better adapted traits will be the ones that survive over time, without human interaction.
How does descent with modification work Species look different than their ancestors due to changes over long periods of time with natural selection.
What is common descent as used in this chapter All species, living and extinct, were derived from common ancestors.
What is a homologous structure Structures that have different mature forms but develop from the same the same embryonic tissue
What is a vestigial organ The organs of many animals are so reduced in size that they are just vestiges or traces of homologous organs in other species. These may resemble miniature legs, tails or other structures
