Genes & Variation 1
Flash cards 16-1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a gene pool? | A gene pool consists of all genes, including all the different alleles, that are present in a population |
| How would you calculate relative frequency? | Relative frequency is often expressed as a percentage. It is the number of times other alleles for the same gene occur. |
| What is evolution in terms of genetics? | Evolution is any change in the relative frequency of alleles in a population |
| What are the possible results of a mutation? | Some mutations can affect an organism's fitness, or its ability to survive and reproduce in its environment. |
| Why is gene shuffling discussed in text concerned with variation? | Because mutation is not the only source of heritable variation and this is a way to cause it. |
| What is a single gene trait? | A trait that is controlled by a single gene which has two alleles. |
| How is a polygenic trait different than a single gene trait? | A polygenic trait has two or more genes while a single gene trait has one gene. |
