Genes and Variation
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a gene pool? | consists of all genes, including all the different alleles, that are present in a population. |
| How would you calculate relative frequency? | the number of times that the allele occurs in a gene pool, compared with the number of times other alleles for the same gene occur. |
| What is evolution in terms of genetics? | any change in the relative frequency of alleles in a population. |
| What are the possible results of a mutation? | possible results are that some can affect an organisms fitness, or ability to survive and reproduce. |
| Why is gene shuffling discussed in text concerned with variation? | gene shuffling causes new combinations of traits and genetic diversity |
| What is a single gene trait? | the number of phenotypes produced for a given trait on how many genes control the trait. |
| How is a polygenetic trait different than a single gene trait? | polygenic traits have more genes than a single gene trait |
