What does FSH stand for? follicle stimulating hormone
Where is LH and ICSH produced? The pituitary gland
What does LH stand for? luteinising hormone
What does ICSH stand for? interstitial cell stimulating hormone
What triggers the onset of puberty? Releaser Hormone
Where is releaser hormone produced? in the hypothalamus
What is the job of FSH in males? promotes sperm production
What is the job of ICSH? stimulates the production of testosterone.
What is the job of testosterone? stimulates sperm production and activates the prostate gland and seminal vesicles.
What controls testosterone levels? Negative feedback control of testosterone by FSH and ICSH.
On average how long does the menstrual cycle take? 28 days
What happens on day 1 of the menstrual cycle? the first day of menstruation
What is the first phase of the menstrual cycle known as? follicular phase.
In females, what does FSH do? stimulates the development of a follicle and the production of oestrogen by the follicle
Where is oestrogen prodiced? the follicle
What does oestrogen do? Oestrogen stimulates proliferation of the endometrium preparing it for implantation, and affects the consistency of cervical mucus making it more easily penetrated by sperm. Peak levels of oestrogen stimulate a surge in the secretion of LH.
What does the surge in LH do? causes ovulation
What is ovulation? Ovulation is the release of an egg (ovum) from a follicle in the ovary.
On what day of the menstrual cycle (on average) does ovulation occur? day 14
What is the second stage of the menstrual cycle known as? The luteal phase
During the second stage of the menstrual cycle what does the follicle become? corpus luteum
What does the corpus luteum secrete? progesterone
What does progesterone do? promotes further development and vascularisation of the endometrium preparing it for implantation if fertilisation occurs
What leads to the degeneration of the corpus luteum? The lack of LH
What hormone level drops as the corpus luteum degenerates? progesterone
What does a drop in progesterone lead to? menstruation
If fertilisation occurs what happens to the corpus luteum? does not degenerate
If fertilisation occurs what happens to progesterone levels? progesterone levels remain high
