TermDefinition
genes the structures that carry inherited traits
allele Different forms of a gene
Gregor Mendel father of modern genetics
trait The individual expression of a specific feature.
feature An inherited structure or other characteristic.
dominant An allele that is always expressed when present.
recessive An allele that is masked (hidden) when a dominant allele is present.
chromosomes Structures inside a nucleus that carry DNA and genes.
homozygous An organism that has two identical alleles for a trait (purebred)
heterozygous An organism that has two different alleles for a trait (hybrid)
genetics The scientific study of heredity.
phenotype An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits.
genotype An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations.
inherited passed from parent to offspring
offspring Product of reproduction, a new organism produced
generation one step in the line of descent of a family
variation The range of differences between traits in a population.
population A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area at the same time.
asexual reproduction One parent passes identical genetic material to their offspring.
sexual reproduction Two parents give rise to offspring that have unique combinations of genes inherited from the two parents.
