| homozygous | An organism that has two identical alleles for a trait (purebred) |
| heterozygous | An organism that has two different alleles for a trait (hybrid) |
| genetics | The scientific study of heredity. |
| phenotype | An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits. |
| genotype | An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations. |
| inherited | passed from parent to offspring |
| offspring | Product of reproduction, a new organism produced |

| variation | The range of differences between traits in a population. |
| population | A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area at the same time. |
| asexual reproduction | One parent passes identical genetic material to their offspring. |
| sexual reproduction | Two parents give rise to offspring that have unique combinations of genes inherited from the two parents. |
