multicellular Composed of many cells.
unicellular having or consisting of a single cell
autotrophic An organism that makes its own food. (Ex: plants)
heterotrophic An organism that cannot make its own food, but must consume it from other sources.
asexual reproduction Reproduction of offspring by one parent.
sexual reproduction The production of offspring by two parents; with each parent contributing half the material in the DNA.
chemosynthetic The process of making glucose (carbohydrates) by using the energy released from chemical reactions instead of the energy of sunlight.
photosynthetic The process by which green plants and certain other organisms make glucose from carbon dioxide and water, using energy from sunlight.
dichotomous key a tool used to find an organisms species by looking at its characteristics
cell wall The outermost layer of cells in plants, bacteria, fungi, and many algae that gives shape to the cell and protects it from infection
species Ranks below a genus. Organisms with many same characteristics that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
bacteria Domain of unicellular organisms that lack a cell nucleus, and can cause disease. Most abundant life form on Earth.
plantae The kingdom that is made up of plants
Archaebacteria The kingdom made up of “extremophiles.”
animalia The kingdom that is made up of animals
fungi a kingdom, division, or other major group of living things comprising the fungi
domain The highest taxonomic rank of organisms, based on DNA. There are 3.
protista a taxonomic kingdom comprising the protists.
kingdom The second highest rank in Linnaean taxonomy, under Domain. There are 6.
Chloroplast The organelle where photosynthesis takes place.
Biotic Living
Abiotic Not Living
Archaea Domain of Unicellular organisms that have no cell nucleus or membrane bound organelles. Differ from bacteria chemically. Often live in extreme conditions.
Eukarya Domain that includes all eukaryotic organisms.
Eubacteria The Kingdom made up of "normal" bacteria
