| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| diet | the type and amount of food that a person eats |
| calorie | measurement of energy in food |
| Metabolism | the combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials |
| basal metabolic rate (BMR) | the rate at which the body burns energy when the organism is resting |
| Macronutrients | carbohydrates, proteins, and fats |
| Carbohydrates | the starches and sugars present in foods that can be broken down to glucose |
| Lipids | fats and oils, a long term energy source |
| Proteins | building block for muscles and tissues |
| circulatory system | Transports oxygen, waste, nutrients, hormones, heat, etc... around the body |
| skeletal system | bones and muscles |
| Photosynthesis | Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars |
| Respiration | The process by which cells break down simple food molecules to release the energy they contain. |
| Chloroplast | An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs |
| Mitochondria | Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production |
| glucose | A simple sugar that is an important source of energy. |
| The fuel of life | food; ultimately glucose |
| Main source of energy | sun |
| catalyst | something that starts or speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction |
