diet the type and amount of food that a person eats
calorie measurement of energy in food
Metabolism the combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials
basal metabolic rate (BMR) the rate at which the body burns energy when the organism is resting
Macronutrients carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
Carbohydrates the starches and sugars present in foods that can be broken down to glucose
Lipids fats and oils, a long term energy source
Proteins building block for muscles and tissues
circulatory system Transports oxygen, waste, nutrients, hormones, heat, etc... around the body
skeletal system bones and muscles
Photosynthesis Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugars
Respiration The process by which cells break down simple food molecules to release the energy they contain.
Chloroplast An organelle found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production
glucose A simple sugar that is an important source of energy.
The fuel of life food; ultimately glucose
Main source of energy sun
catalyst something that starts or speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction
