evolution Change in a kind of organism over time; process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms.
variation Any difference between individuals of the same species.
mutation change in a DNA sequence that affects genetic information
natural selection A process in which individuals that have certain inherited traits tend to survive and reproduce at higher rates than other individuals because of those traits.
artificial selection selective breeding of plants and animals to promote the occurrence of desirable traits in offspring
adaptation A characteristic that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment.
fossil The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past
Charles Darwin English natural scientist who formulated a theory of evolution by natural selection (1809-1882)
transitional fossils Fossils that provide patterns of evolutionary change from the early ancestors to modern life forms.
extinction A term that typically describes a species that no longer has any known living individuals.
common ancestry when organisms are descended from a single ancestor
fossil record information about past life, including the structure of organisms, what they ate, what ate them, in what environment they lived, and the order in which they lived
