scrotum pouch of skin outside body cavity; keeps testes close or far from the body at optimal temp for sperm development - about 3 degrees lower than normal body temp
testes suspended outside abdominal cavity by scrotum; contain tubules where sperm are produced
seminiferous tubules inside each testis; where sperm are produced by meiosis
epididymis tube extending from seminiferous tubules to vas deferens; located outside and on top of testis
vas deferens (sperm duct) one of the passageways or tubes the sperm travel through, connect to a short ejaculatory duct
seminal vesicles glands which secrete about 30% of seminal fluid and add fructose to sperm as they pass
prostate gland secretes milky alkaline fluid which composes about 60% of seminal fluid; donut shaped
ejaculatory duct located in prostate, connects vas deferens (sperm duct) to urethra
urethra passes through penis and opens to outside, carries semen and urine to outside of body
bulbourethral gland secretes a mucus-like fluid that provides lubrication for intercourse, composes about 5% of seminal fluid
penis releases sperm/urine
FSH follicle-stimulating hormone - stimulates the development of sperm cells in the testes
LH luteinizing hormone - stimulates cells in the seminiferous tubules (testes) to secrete testosterone
testosterone has a role in sperm production and development of male secondary sex characteristics, like a deep voice and male musculature
