Organelles

Organelles of the Cell

TermDefinition
RIBOSOME Protein factory, makes proteins
CENTRIOLE Aids in cellular division
CYTOPLASM Fluid material that fills the cell that is contained between the cell membrane and the nuclear membrane. The organelles are suspended within the cytoplasm
NUCLEOLUS Forms ribosomes, found in the nucleus
CELL WALL Provides protection and support for the cell
CYTOSKELETON Provides a framework to support the cell
VACUOLE Stores food, water, wastes
PLASTIDS Structure found in plants, stores starches and pigments
CHROMOSOME Structure found in the nucleus, contains DNA which forms the genetic code
GOLGI BODY Structure in the cell that prepares and packages proteins in order to export them from the cell
NUCLEAR ENVELOPE Surrounds the nucleus, allows materials to move in and out of the nucleus
CHLOROPLAST Structure found in plants that contains chlorophyll, converts light energy from the sun into sugars
CHROMATIN Spaghetti-like material found in the nucleus that condenses to become chromosomes
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM Series of tubules within the cell, used for transporting materials throughout the cell
CELL MEMBRANE Regulates what enters and leaves the cell
NUCLEAR PORES Holes in the nucleus, allows materials to pass between the nucleus and the cytoplasm
NUCLEUS Control center of the cell, directs cell activities, it acts like the brain of the cell
LYSOSOME Contains digestive enzymes which aid in cellular digestion
MITOCHONDRIA Powerhouse of the cell, breaks down glucose to release energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
