setting up & Stocking a Fish Tank

name the 4 eco-systems created in aquaria tropical marine tropical fresh water temperate / fresh water brackish
what are 2 differences between tropical marine and freshwater environments difference in temperature between the two tropical freshwater replicates rainforest conditions tropical marine replicates rock/coral environments
what is the difference between brackish and temperate freshwater Brackish has more salinity than freshwater but not as much as seawater
Which species thrive best in Brackish water Goldfish
What 5 things do you need to check in your aquarium? Temperature, Lighting, PH, ammonia, Nitrite levels
what PH level should a freshwater tank measure? PH 7 (neutral)
What PH level should a marine tank measure? PH 8 (slightly alkaline)
Ammonia poisoning can also be called death by poo!
what is the first part of the nitrogen cycle Fish waste and uneaten food produces ammonia Ammonia produces NH4 (ionized ammonium) or NH3 unionized ammonia Changes the PH of the water under PH7= ammonium. 7+ = ammonia
what is the second stage of the nitrogen cycle Bacteria oxidizes the ammonia which produces nitrites. test kits are used to check nitrite levels
Which fish is nitrates most harmful to? freshwater fish
How long does it take to set up the nitrogen cycle in a new tank? 2 weeks to two months
Name two things you should use to set up a nitrogen cycle. seed your tank with gravel from an already established tank add in pure ammonia
How many types of filters are there? see if you can name them all Box filter - Moving bed filter/undergravel filter Trickle filter Cannister filter Tank filter Sponge filter
Name two problems if your tank water is unfiltered High levels of ammonia and nitrates Low oxygen levels low PH levels Algae blooms Cloudy water
What does aeration do to the water? It agitates the water surface so that more oxygen moves into the water.
Acclimating your new fish.. 4 steps name them No bright lights in the aquarium Float fish in their sealed transport bags with the water from earlier tank for 20 mins, open bags and roll top down to create a floating rim. After 20 mins gently release fish into tank Leave lights off for a few hours.
