Sexual Selection

QuestionAnswer
Sexual Selection Natural selection arising through preference by one sex for certain characteristics in individuals of the other sex.
Anisogamy The allocation of workload across the two gametes: egg and sperm. Females invest more energy in one gamete where males invest less energy in multiple. Making females the "choosier" sex.
Sexual Dimorphism The difference in size and other phenotypical traits between the sexes of a species.
Monogamy The habit of having only one mate at a time.
Polygamy The habit of having multiple mates at a time.
Vibrancy The brightness of color in an individual hinting at their current state of nutrition.
Courtship The behavior of animals designed to attract a mate.
Female Choice Form of sexual selection pressure where the female selects for the best looking male.
Male-male Competition Form of sexual selection pressure where females or other resources are very limited and males must compete with each other over them.
