| carrier | An individual who is heterozygous for a recessive disorder. |
| pedigree | A diagram that traces the inheritance of a particular trait through several generations. |
| incomplete dominance | Where the heterozygous phenotype is an intermediate phenotype between the two homozygous phenotypes. |
| codominance | Where both alleles are expressed in the heterozygous condition. An example is sickle cell anemia. |
| multiple alleles | Where some forms of inheritance, such as blood groups in humans, are determined. |
| epistasis | Where variety is the result of one allele hiding the effects of another allele, |
| sex chromosome | The pair of chromosomes that determine the gender of an organism. |
| autosome | The other 22 pairs of chromosomes that are not considered gametes or sex chromosomes. |
| sex-linked trait | Traits controlled by genes located on the X chromosome. |
| polygenic trait | Where phenotypic traits arise from the interaction of multiple pairs of genes. Traits such as skin color, height, eye color, and fingerprint pattern are polygenic traits. |
