Ch 9 Fund of Genetic
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| genetics | the field of biology devoted to understanding how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring |
| heredity | the transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring. |
| trait | a genetically determined variant of a characteristic, such as yellow flower color |
| pollination | pollen grains from the anther (male) are transferred to the stigma (female) |
| self-pollination | when pollen is transferred the anther to the stigma of the same plant |
| cross-pollination | transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of different plants |
| true-breeding | pure for a trait always produce offspring with that trait when they self-pollinate |
| P generation | true-breeding parents |
| F1 generation | offspring of the P generation |
| F2 generation | offspring of the F1 generation or second generation of the P generation |
| dominant | masks or dominates the other trait |
| recessive | the trait that gets dominated or masked |
| law of segregation | a pair of factors (traits) is segregated, or separated, during the formation of gametes |
| law of independent assortment | factors separate independently of one another during the formation of gametes |
| molecular genetics | study of the structure and function of chromosomes and genes |
| allele | alternative form of a gene (Mendel's factors) |
| genotype | an organism's genetic make up (Letters) |
| phenotype | an organism's appearance (what we see) |
| homozygous | when both alleles of a pair are alike |
| heterozygous | when both alleles of a pair are different |
| probability | the likelihood that a specific event will occur |
| monohybrid cross | a cross in which only one characteristic is tracked |
| punnett square | diagram used to predict the probable distribution of inherited traits in offspring |
| genotypic ratio | the ratio of the genotypes that appear in offspring |
| phenotypic ratio | the ratio of the offspring's phenotypes |
| testcross | an individual of an unknown genotype is crossed with a homozygous recessive individual |
| complete dominance | one allele is completely dominant over the other allele |
| incomplete dominance | heterozygous - offspring will have a phenotype in-between that of the parents. |
| codominance | when both alleles for a gene are expressed in a heterozygous offspring |
| dihybrid cross | a cross in which two characteristics are tracked |
