10) Speciation
Biology Revision Final
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is a specie | a biological species is a group of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from others |
Why is it hard to define a species? | Some organisms from different species look similar while some members of the same species look very different. |
Give 2 examples for pre-zygotic isolations | 1) Ecological: Lions and tigers 2) Behavioural: Different song birds 3)Temporal: Leopard frog and wood frig 4) Mechanical: Clockwise and counterclockwise matin snails |
What is pre-zigotic isolation? | Impeding different species from mating, it's a barrier. It can be geograpical, ecological, temporal, behavioral, mechanical. |
What is post-zygotic isolation? | When pre-zygotic barriers and overcome and 2 individuals from different species produce a offspring (called hybrid). There's still a barrier: hybrids sometimes can't develop into a fertile adult (this is postzygotic barrier). |
