Osmosis

Study Strategy for osmosis

QuestionAnswer
Osmosis The diffusion of a solvent (e.g. water) across a semipermeable membrane from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration.
Diffusion Movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Solvent A liquid in which substances (solutes) can dissolve into (e.g. water)
Solute Substances/particles that can dissolve in liquids (e.g. salt)
Semipermeable Membrane A barrier that will only allow some molecules to pass through while blocking the passage of others
Concentration Gradient The difference in concentration of particles in a solution.
Equilibrium The concentration of the solute is the same throughout the entire solution OR having equal osmotic pressure across the entire solution
Osmotic Pressure The minimum pressure needed to stop osmosis. Occurs when the solution reaches equilibrium.
