Osmosis
Study Strategy for osmosis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Osmosis | The diffusion of a solvent (e.g. water) across a semipermeable membrane from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration. |
| Diffusion | Movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
| Solvent | A liquid in which substances (solutes) can dissolve into (e.g. water) |
| Solute | Substances/particles that can dissolve in liquids (e.g. salt) |
| Semipermeable Membrane | A barrier that will only allow some molecules to pass through while blocking the passage of others |
| Concentration Gradient | The difference in concentration of particles in a solution. |
| Equilibrium | The concentration of the solute is the same throughout the entire solution OR having equal osmotic pressure across the entire solution |
| Osmotic Pressure | The minimum pressure needed to stop osmosis. Occurs when the solution reaches equilibrium. |
